The Destruction of Jerusalem did not cause the end of the Jewish people or their religion. The Jews in Babylon worked at jobs, raised families, and met together weekly, establishing Judaism- the Jewish religion as we know it today. And when Jews returned to Jerusalem, they did not bring idols. God had cleansed his city.
